My passion for tennis serves as a tonic of motivation

Hobbies and interests form a part of everyone’s life. Away from the hustle and bustle of the school, college and office premises, people find solace in the various recreational activities they undergo in their spare time. These recreation activities provide refreshment in one’s mind. There can be a wide range of topics of interest as hobbies. My favourite hobby amongst many others is watching sports on television. Although I follow different kinds of sports on television, one sport that I love to follow is tennis. I wasn’t an avid follower of tennis in my childhood days. My interest grew in tennis when I started to understand its rules and regulations as I grew up. Since then, I have been following the sport regularly. It is considered a lucrative sport by all means and standards. At the same time, it is a global sport as well as it is played across all countries around the world. Every country including India has its representation in both singles and doubles. My passion for this sport goes back to my school days. I follow all ATP/ WTA and Grand Slam tournament matches on television. It is a delight to watch tennis players compete against each other on different surfaces like hard, clay, grass, etc. It is fascinating to watch tennis players’ strength and ability to play for hours and hours. The capacity of the entire stadium filled with cheering spectators, the dress code of the players, ball girls and ball boys, chairperson and linesman are a treat to watch. Every player’s biography, rankings history, career earnings, on and off-court interviews of players and their inspiring stories of their childhood days of tennis to the present day of stardom and glory are viewed with great interest by me. The guidance that they get from their coaches and the amount of practice behind every tournaments success is highly commendable. Many records are created and some are yet to be broken in tennis. It pains to see that India being a densely populated country with immense talents has not been able to make a mark in the international arena except for a handful of players. The achievements of tennis players and their inspiring journey of success have long been an inspiration for me to achieve something in life. During my teens, my interest in this sport grew rapidly. My joy knew no bounds when one fine day my uncle made a surprise visit to my house and gifted me a new tennis racquet on my birthday. There is no dearth of sporting talents in our country. I believe that to bring the sport to a different level, sports federations need to nurture the rising talents. An upcoming player should be given full facilities so that he/she can play with full potential in various tournaments in India and abroad. It will help them gain experience that is exactly what is necessary to perform better in tournaments that they play.
