His leadership also led to strained relations between Cuba and the United States, including the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

Fidel Castro remained in power until 2008 when he handed over the presidency to his brother, Raúl Castro. He continued to be a prominent figure in Cuban politics and international affairs until his retirement and eventual passing in 2016.
